PUBLIC MEETING

CHILDREN'S SERVICES IN LEVENSHULME

Are the plans for Broom Avenue Children's Centre the answer?

7:30pm, Wednesday 4th July, Madina Mosque, Barlow Road.

With Judith Elderkin, former president of the National Union of Teachers, parents' groups and Sure Start representatives from the City Council (invited).

The city council plan to convert Broom Avenue Children's Centre into a "Sure Start Hub". This involves some major changes to the building and to the way it operates. As well as reducing the overall space available to the children currently in daycare, the plans also invite the private sector into our state childcare, allowing the possibility of a two-tier system, with private and public sector services working out of the same building. This raises some fundamental questions about how our public services, especially our education and childcare, should be run.

This meeting will show the council what WE mean by consultation: an open and informed debate, with opportunity to hear ALL views, followed by an ACTUAL VOTE on the plans. So far, only the council's point of view has been publicly expressed, we need a meeting where the other side of the story can be told. We would encourage supporters of the plans to attend, as well as Sure Start workers and volunteers, to ensure that a proper debate can happen.

If this meeting is successful and well-attended, it could change the way the City Council deals with Levenshulme in the future and set a precedent for this type of REAL consultation. Please support it.
