  • Chapel Street Scrapyards I saw some schoolchildren this morning coughing and wheezing as they passed the Belper tools/Rubber grinding yard on Chapel Street, I looked over at the long plume of smoke and peeked inside. Apparently the burning of waste is illegal within residential areas, I hope the authorities give the owner of this yard a telling off, fine, slap on the wrist or whatever it is they do because they had metal drums full of waste and oil cans etc piled up next to the fire they had made. Maybe they were roasting chestnuts, I doubt it.

We have a push within society to reduce carbon emissions and then we have these scrapyard places burning waste (asbestos maybe, cancer causing pollutants? who knows?) they are killing us with their poison so please anyone else with concerns post up here and maybe we can draft a petition or appeal to the scrap yard owner to stop this practice.

  • 'Cash Generator' to open a shop in the Post Office on Albert Road????? This is worrying news!
First of all the 'Wallstyle' shop on Stockport Road (next to the sub-Iceland 'Cooltrader') is being turned into a Betting Shop, other shops that are not already kebab/fast food shops are being turned into dubious mortgage brokers, (with no customers) loan companies etc.

Now that the government have finally realised that the majority of the overseas colleges in the UK are bogus we won't need to worry about the building becoming the Cambridge University of Managerial International Executive Sciences
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2009/mar/31/overseas-student-rules

Is there really a need for a Cash Generator in Levenshulme? We want decent bars, deli's etc, not shops that prey on the poor.

I think we need to organise a petition to stop this happening as I for one do not want this kind of shop in my area.

  • constitution See below for the recent update.

    LEVY SWIMMING BATHS / PRESS
I'm sure you have all noticed the brilliant press coverage that Friends of Levenshulme has had recently, with regards to our swimming baths. The next step will be to carry on pushing the swimming baths petition and then set a 'hand in date' and corresponding event. I'm sure you will all carry on supporting this. The recent changes to the Swimming Baths are looking fantastic, but more is needed.

    STALLS
Friends of Levenshulme have always been keen on doing stalls. Although this email list is a fantastic way of keeping in touch, it excludes people in the community who don't use email on a regular basis. There will be a new series of stalls to:
    1) carry on pushing the swimming baths petition
    2) broaden the awareness of Friends of Levenshulme
Stalls will take place on Thursdays, 4.30 - 5.30, outside Cooltrader. The first one being on Thursday October 1st @ 4.30. Of course the time / day may change as it starts to get darker earlier. See you there!

    FoL CORE
As you are aware, Friends of Levenshulme has run a series of campaigns really successfully. The FoL Core team has worked together really effectively to coordinate the campaigns. And it would have been impossible without all of your ongoing support. However, a few vacancies on FoL Core have arisen recently. People generally sit on FoL Core for a while and then have to call it a day again as they have other demands on their time. An open meeting will be held to coopt extra members onto FoL Core. We have had some interest already from people keen to improve the local area. The above-mentioned stalls will be an excellent measure of preparation for a revitalised FoL, that truly reflects the fabric of the community.

    Regards
    FoL

PS - As usual, hard copies of this update will be available from South Levy Post Office, from tomorrow afternoon.

  • Levenshulme Needs a New Boxing Gym The old community centre was used as a boxing gym for many years, although some people may not be keen on boxing it is a useful tool for teenagers and young adults, it teaches discipline and respect, something that is missing in a large proportion of our young adults.

Levenshulme no longer has a boxing gym and desperately needs one, there is now a facebook group as well as petitions being organised.

Please show your support for Levenshulme
