Levenshulme Community Garden

The council should be proud of local people taking such a stand. What does this say to them? - we love our Levenshulme and want to improve it. Yes we do give a sh!t. At least they could give some of the money raised by selling the land back the people. I feel sadly, we are fighting a losing battle - the decsion has already been made. 8  out of 8 found this valuable. Do you?

They decided to sell this land - it was actually with the sales team when Leese got Jamie's letter - it was that letter that made Leese pull the land back into limbo until they'd decided what to do.

The council make lots of decisions, (for example, to sell off Greenbank Fields, to install SureStart in Chapel Street School) which are then rapidly UNMADE when local people turn up and start intervening. Greenbank was stopped, SureStart were thrown out of Chapel Street school by the governors.

Part of the way the Council work is to make decisions without taking into account those affected by the decision. When those people stand up, the Council can be forced to back down. It's a long haul, but as long as this campaign keeps holding them to account publicly, and loudly asserting our right to that land, there are certain things they just can't get away with. Selling this land will be one of them.

Hate to be a stick in the mud!
I think it is fabulous the work you are doing on the old Community centre site.
However ever since you have put down the stone path way we have had no end of problems with kids and stones. There have been several cracked car window screens and damaged paint work. The kids stand on the path and throw stones at anything they feel makes a good target.
We have spoken to other residents about this who have had similar problems. We understand that the community police have been involved in this and parents have been spoken to. But the problem is on going.
Whilst I don't have an immediate solution, I just wanted to let you know whats been happening in the hope that you may have a practical (and cost effective) solution

Thanks alot,
Emma (a chapel street resident)

The money was refused by FOL due to the constitution - it went to a residents' group. SLUG is a group of folks doing the garden. FOL is a campaigining group who keep fighting to keep the land public as there is so littlle land left in Leve.

I think it's great that there are residents in Leve who decided to do something with the space rather than sit in the pub complaining about things 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

so what has happened with the site?
who owns it?
not to sure i would welcome a garden , local kids would just use it for hanging around in and becoming a nusience.
would not mind seeing the site developed into something like a well run youth club.
