Sir Richard Leese's letter
Apr 22 2008, 4:17 PM EDT
Have any of the issues been taken up with local councillors, and, if so, what was the response?

To a certain extent Sir Richard is right, surely our local MPs should be campaigning on our behalf. I haven't seen much evidence of this of late.

I believe that this response is quite apropriate. We have councillors who should be doing the work we ask of Richard Leese. They are the people we should be targeting with our issues. It is unfair to ask anybody else to do their work. This country will only run properly and efficiently if people are responsible for the duties given to them. Although more help from Richard Leese would be appreciated we really need to question the adequacy of our councillors.

It seems to me that the campaign is coming across as anti council rather than pro Levenshulme. In my experience more is achieved by working with people rather than against them. Surely we should be encouraging everyone to take pride in our area rather than running it down and ensuring that our locally elected representatives are working for us and with us.

I am new to this site and would consider myself a friend of Levenshulme.
It seems from Richard Leese's letter that he is passing the buck, i.e. go to your local councillors. If so, what attention would be given to the councillors? Or is it that the voices of local residents can only be heard if they are channeled through formal bureaucratic procedures as opposed to informal actions such as postcards?
As a formality I wrote to the MP Gerald Kaufman with regards to the pollution, flytipping and rundown environment of Chapel Street. He responded very quickly and I have since received a letter from Gerald Kaufman and the 'Chief Executive' Howard Bernstein. The result is that the envinromental pollution is now being closely monitored by the local public protection officer and the street environment manager.
It seems that the council take notice when an MP contacts them.
Judging from the 'Leese' letter any 'informal' action will be bounced back down the hierarchy....or maybe there isn't the appropiate filing mechanism for objects such as postcards.
