Jul 14 2008, 3:01 PM EDT i believe there is a new brothel that is opening in levenshulme in 2 weeks time. they're just waiting on their late entertainment licence. a (defined) nightclub in prague and the nightclub that is opening, golden prague (was formerly the wheatsheaf), are one & the same thing-a brothel! they're trying to open a sex establishment on the a6 in an ex public house. the way they're trying to get around the law is by obtaining a late entertainment licence, having a nightclub downstairs with dancers (prostitutes)&then the men can take them upstairs (private members club-only men?) to the old hotel rooms & pay for sex (or getting round the no money changing hands another way). after having been in there it seems not really czech/slovakian/polish but has clientele who are more like serbian/romanian/albanian, & the locals. the few key members of staff are probably czech/slovakian but the rest involved are not. is there anything that can be done now rather than after the fact? isnt having jackies (rear entrance!)& the rest bad enough? bringing prostitution into a public house on an busy a-road from manchester-stockport, ie making it part of accepted society is disgusting & will not do our children any favours. trying to get around english laws&taking the residents for fools is not acceptable! dont get me wrong i am sure a lot of the men would love it-they should stick to sneaking out of sleezy shop doorsways or go back on holiday to thailand/the dam etc. isnt our current society bad enough with the gangsters and the wannabe gangsters? - if something isnt done to stop this going ahead we will probably have albania/serbian gypsy gangsters and czech/albanian etc prostitutes versus the levenshulme trouble-makers - and ironically we will then be backing the gangsters hahahahaha! how ironic! not 100% but this needs to be looked into sooner rather than later. does anyone care about the place they live in? - a concerned resident 5 out of 6 found this valuable. Jul 14 2008, 4:24 PM EDT i posted the original message as i was just highlighting my concerns for the future of the levenshulme neighbourhood and residents because i have been told this information by a number of people including actually people who work in the golden prague, the landlord himself tried cagely not to admit the fact. there are a number of people who have raised concerns - i checked the licences applied for and they have applied for a late nite licence (http://www.manchester.gov.uk/site/scripts/services_info.php?serviceID=1284) - they were refused the first time as they did not fully advertise the fact so were knocked back the first time due only to not complying to this. when i was told about their intentions and they confirmed them, and a few other people who have been in the old wheatsheaf have had the same response when asking similar questions. too be honest i hope i am wrong - i would rather be wrong than right. it should be looked into now rather than later by anybody who cares about the possibility of it being true. does anybody care? 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Jul 14 2008, 4:36 PM EDT have heard that in a good few of the pubs down the road of a lot of the fellas. not seen any news about it but if ya from levy you know what its like so if the staff have told people on the sly its bound to be heard. not always right so if aybody would be offendedd they should write to council . levy is one of the biggest grapevines known to man, before i finshed this message my mate just belled me from the farmers to tell me what i was typeing 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Jul 14 2008, 4:50 PM EDT Hello I think everyone (including you) who gets in involved in FOl cares a lot about the area. Lots of residents have done and continue to do much work here. But as FOL is a voluntary campaign group and is made-up of anyone who wants to join in (who agrees with the campaign in general) it doesn't have any sway over any private business (pubs, shops) at all, FOL can only host dicussions so that folks can raise issues and campaign on them if they so wish. FOl hasn't any power over the Council etiher and can't put in a FOl objection to any planning applications as they wouldn't be recognised - but individuals can and should raise concerns about planning if they feel it is right to do so. Which is how the greeen bank campaign operated. FOl website does have a link to planning applications so that individuals can check them and respond as they wish. You've put up a really good link for people to view the application so they can raise objections if they want to do so: that's very useful info as it allows people to take a look. Again, if people want to object they can do so on appropriate grounds. The licence application has to go through licensing, I think, not just planning. If you're worried about the place and potential explotation of women by men you could also contact licensing at the Council and ask anyone else you know who is worried to do the same. You can also contact your Councillor for representation/advice. Sorry this isn't more helpful! But is a Cllr issue (and community saftey/police one potentially) and I'd suggest emailing them so they can take up the concerns asap. I do wonder if it will get blocked as it is near houses? Jul 14 2008, 4:58 PM EDT ur totaly right patrick, no secrets are kept in leve, maybe good thing for once. your comment made me laugh mate, its all true. if the staff told a few thinkign future business when all goes ahead it has back-fired and that leve grapevine we have all been abused by has worked in leves favour, how hilarious. maybe the friends of manchester could help? which pub do they meet in now? if you know which pub they meet in i will pop in and get them to look into. he leve grapevine is usually under-ground so best let the relevant people know. everybody is talking about it in the pubs already. the leve grapevine rules. fair play to you patrick, leve has a big irish community and white working/some low class who love to gossip / share news. apparently gossip exists to keep the morals of society in tact and on this occasion has proved a point. wonder if the leve grapevine will turn out to be right????????? 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Jul 14 2008, 5:40 PM EDT that is disgusting mark whoever you are. i take it you do not have children. the wheatsheaf is a building that has stood for hundreds of years in a prominent postition on the original road from manchester to london. to try to put a brothel upstairs is absolutely outrageous. i was i there myself last week as i live on clare road so wanted to see what it was like. it does look nice and food is okay but i was worried when i heard the young local lads talking about the hot women that will be there within a few weeks. there will be a private male only members club upstairs and the dancers they will employ will offer sex upstairs. it is disgusting, i do not know if all these rumours are true. i have heard this many people who live, work and drink in the community of levenshulme. i went in myself and asked and the gentleman said i could have a hot lady and extra things in a few weeks, i am not that way inclined - i have a beautiful english/irish wife and would not dream of such a thing. has anybody contacted the council? 5 out of 5 found this valuable. Jul 14 2008, 6:01 PM EDT Hi yes I can see what you are worried about - but a licence has to take into account noise from a legitimate concern. Even if something is a cover it can't say that on the application. So objections can be based on noise etc. If it goes ahead and the pub runs a brothel then it is a police matter I guess. As said anyone and everyone who has concerns should take the matter up. I have been in there as it happens and saw nothing odd: found it a bit quiet but no hassle. Not that that means anything, of course - just an observation. There is loads of prostitution on the A6 already - in all sorts of forms! So I guess if others get away with it...would this one be different and should it be? Don't get me wrong (I'm not being glib) as I always worry about women's welfare to be honest. But the whole thing is a minefield in terms of laws etc etc. and a real conundrum with regards the whole debate about how folks choose (or have no choice) about how to earn some money. But that aside, I also do wonder if they'll get the application passed? 1 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |
